Below, the Io\nmilitary special projects base appears peaceful.  You know otherwise.\nHigh Command lost contact with the secret outpost several weeks ago and\ndispatched the spacecruiser STALWART to investigate.  Failing to\nestablish direct-contact communications, it has become your duty to\njourney down to Io and assess the situation.\n\nDuring your mission briefing, High Command revealed some disturbing\ninformation to you concerning problems with the now defunct UAC bases on\nMars.  H.C. gave no details, mentioning a highly classified project that\n\"didn't quite work out as expected\".  All they would say is that you\nshould exercise extreme caution when approaching Io, as similiar\nresearch was in progress there.\n\nAs you thumb the retro-thrusters on, you notice a lot of commotion near\nthe landing pad.  You breathe a sigh of relief, glad that at least\neveryone appears to be all right.  Their transmitter is probably down.\nYou reach for the com link to radio STALWART to send down a tech team . . .\n\nYour shuttlecraft lurches violently.  You drop the com link and grab the\ncontrols, trying in vain to bring the craft back in line.  No use -\nyou've lost engine control.  Your ship is all ablaze.  You focus all of\nyour strength and concentration, willing your ship to crash/land near\nthe landing pad, where help will be quickly available.  With a\near-splitting cacophany of tearing metal, your shuttle comes to a rest.\nYou fight to maintain consciousness, moving through the flames and smoke\ntoward the hatch.  It opens up, letting in the feeble light of a sun\nhundreds of millions of miles away. You stumble through.  Coughing\nviolently, you look up and see . . .\n\n\"WHAT IN THE HELL . . .?!\"\n\nYou fall unconscious.\n\nYou awake, only to find yourself alone in a gloomy prison cell.  From\nthe looks of the decaying bodies around you, the chances of rescue look\nslim. However, you didn't get into special forces by depending on others\nto solve your problems.  A few minutes later when a guard walks by your\ncell, you reach out and grab the poor fool, instantly breaking his neck.\nYou take his pistol, and begin your fight to freedom . . .\n\nMission Seques\nMission 2         : You've managed to escape imprisonment, only to\n                    discover that the Io base has been completely\n                    overrun by the enemy.  And where are the thousands\n                    of personnel who were stationed here?\n\nMission 3         : You've routed the enemy, and they've retreated into\n                    the underground waste disposal system. However, you\n                    can find no trace, dead or otherwise, of the men and\n                    women who were stationed on Io.  Alone, and without\n                    transport or communications, you're only chance to\n                    make it off this rock anytime soon is to give chase\n                    to the demons, in hopes of locating the missing Io\n                    personnel.\n\nMission 4         : You've battled it out with the forces of evil down\n                    in the treacherous waste disposal system beneath the\n                    Io base, and kicked their collective asses.  But\n                    you've only won a small victory - and the bad guys\n                    are looking to even the score.  As you walk through\n                    the pressure door and emerge from the sewers, you\n                    find yourself in a large underground cavern.\n                    Exhausted and wounded, you gather your courage and\n                    determination and prepare to face your toughest\n                    challenge yet.  If you are to have any hope of\n                    surviving this ordeal, you must take the greatest\n                    leap of your life - and plunge into THE ABYSS.\n\nAdditional Credits to   : Chris Peters, without whom I would have no\n                          computer to waste my time building missions\n                          for DOOM!, and whose advice was of great help.\n                          Also, for helping find the bugs (see below).\n\n                          Scott A. Smith, who (I discovered a few weeks\n                          after writing the first mission) originally\n                          came up with the idea of \"imprisonment\" and\n                          reaching through bars to kill guards in his\n                          highly commendable e1m1sas.wad, available at\n                          infant2.  Kudos to Scott.\n\n                          id Software, of course, and the makers of DEU,\n                          BSP, DMGRAPH, and REJECT.\n\n================================================================\n\n* Play Information *\n\nEpisode and Level #     : E1M1 - E1M4\nSingle Player           : Yes\nCooperative 2-4 Player  : Yes\nDeathmatch 2-4 Player   : No (But feel free to set it up if you feel the need)\nDifficulty Settings     : Yes\nNew Sounds              : No\nNew Graphics            : No (well, one)\nNew Music               : No\nDemos Replaced          : None\n\n* Construction *\n\nBase                    : New level from scratch\nEditor(s) used          : DEU 5.21, DEU 5.21gcc, BSP 1.1x, REJECT, DMGRAPH\nKnown Bugs              : Centipedes, spiders, mosquitoes, chiggers, and ticks.\n\n                          But seriously:\n                          One HOM in mission 1\n\n                          Many, many bad wall textures in mission 4, due\n                          to oversized sectors.  However, most of these\n                          are concealed by the fact that you can't reach\n                          the walls.  They are surrounded by a river of\n                          lava, and to keep people from killing\n                          themselves in long, treacherous falls into the\n                          lava, I have inserted several impassable lines\n                          (conveniently, these lines also conceal 99% of\n                          the bad walls).  There are still bad walls (I\n                          believe the effect has been dubbed the \"veil\"\n                          effect), and only one or two HOM's.  Overall,\n                          I do not think it affects play much.
